I've been trying to install How do you know that space isn't an issue for a fact? There have been many reports of not being able to install large mods due to the remaining space counter (probably) being wrong due to orphaned files. I believe you can fix that specific issue by clearing your game cache which will redownload all your mods.

Certain mods, such as Alternate Start, Open Cities or the Camping mod refuse to download. I download them to 100% and upon completion I get a message saying "operation could not be completed" then the mod is deleted. Skyrim and fallout 4 last November started experiencing a bug that doesn't let users download a mod and displays a message saying "the operation could not be completed" to fix this glitch launch the game attempt to install a mod off of the in game mod page and then if it doesn't work go to, system>settings>network> network setting for the record, this issue cropped up after i updated a single very small mod, dawnguard map markers. after updating it removed itself from my load order and i couldn't redownload it or anything else. not saying that mod was to blame though. from what i could find, there doesn't seem to be any one reason this issue happens.
